Air Leakage: Why It Matters

When deciding on the best window for your home, you are probably considering the type of material and glass. However, you should also take note of energy performance ratings, such as air leakage (AL), to gauge the window’s potential for gaining and losing heat. Your reliable roof maintenance company discusses further:

Defining Air Leakage

Air leakage, also called air infiltration, refers to the amount of air that passes through the window assembly itself. It’s calculated by how many cubic feet of air can leak through a window per minute, then dividing it by the unit’s total area. This rating is based on the constant wind speed of 25mph.

It is measured on a scale of 0.1 to 0.3. The smaller the number, the more energy-efficient that window will be. However, some manufacturers might take advantage of this rating to show that their products are better than others with a different size and higher AL rating. When looking for replacement windows, be sure to take note of such factors so you can make informed decisions.

The Importance of Air Leakage Rating

Air leaks account for up to 40% of the energy used to heat and cool a home. To reduce this, modern homes usually come with sealants, tapes, and foams. However, this is not always the case, especially for homes built before the 21st century. As your trusted window and roofing installation contractor, we suggest getting replacement windows with AL ratings below 0.3 to help you cut costs in the long run.

There are certain window materials that don’t tightly seal, such as fiberglass, composite, and wood. Thus, they have much higher AL ratings. However, you shouldn’t just base on their AL ratings alone. There are other factors like U-factor and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC), which will determine the window’s energy efficiency.

Furthermore, AL ratings depend on proper installation. Turn to experts like Advanced Roofing to make sure your new window performs as expected. We will also help you find the best product that fits your needs and budget.
